 Different Types of Therapy

TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS

Ego-states: This is a big part of transactional analysis, and it refers to the three main parts of your personality that each contain their own system of thoughts and behaviours. When taken together, they are believed to determine how we relate to others. They are:

1.      Child ego-state: Behaviours, thoughts, and feelings replayed from one’s childhood

2.      Adult ego-state: Behaviours, thoughts and feelings in response to current situations

Parent ego-state: Behaviors, thoughts, and feelings copied from parents. Transactional analysts are trained to recognize which ego states people are transacting from and to follow the transactional sequences to intervene and improve communication quality and effectiveness

HUMANISTIC THERAPY

A humanistic approach therapy provides an atmosphere of support, empathy, and trust in which an individual can share their feelings without fear of judgment. The therapist does not assume the role of an authority figure with clients; the relationship is one of equals and wherever possible, the direction of sessions is determined by the client and their concerns in the moment as the expert on their own life and challenges.

GESTALT

Gestalt therapy is an approach that helps clients focus on the present to understand what is actually happening in their lives at this moment, and how it makes them feel in the moment, rather than what they may assume to be happening based on past experience. Instead of simply talking, clients in gestalt therapy are often encouraged to engage in intellectual and physical experiences that can include role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting. In this way, clients can learn to become more aware of their thoughts and actions, of how negative thought patterns and behaviours may be blocking their self-awareness and making them unhappy, and how they can change. The empty chair technique encourages clients to explore and express their feelings towards an imaginary person or an aspect of themselves.

CBT

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a treatment approach that helps you recognize negative or unhelpful thought and behavior patterns.

CBT aims to help you identify and explore the ways your emotions and thoughts can affect your actions. Once you notice these patterns, you can begin learning how to change your behaviors and develop new coping strategies.

CBT addresses the here and now, and focuses less on the past.
